Which Wich?

Helloooooo to everyone in the "community".  Today I have something that is pretty serious on my mind.  There is sort of a phenomenon that I have noticed recently regarding people who teach and participate in Bible study classes and such.  I have noticed that it seems to be that some people don't want the truth of the Word of God to go forth and for people to learn what the scriptures really mean.  For example, let me make it clearer to you.  You know there is a scripture in the Bible where the Apostle Paul is preaching and a woman who I think is a witch (I am not exactly sure where it is right now, but I could look it up), she comes behind him and starts yelling and shouting loud about how he is such a great man of God and all of that.  Well, she evidently was bothering him and he cast the Devil out of her.  There were some people who didn't like that and I think he had to leave.  Well, what I am talking about is say for instance you start talking about that story in a Bible study.  Some people will try to make it look like the Bible really meant that Paul was wrong for messing with that woman just because she was bothering him.  They would say that God's power should only be used to help people who want demons cast out of them if they are hurting themselves or something like that.  Do you understand?  They would try to make it seem like that story is in the Bible so that we can learn to leave people like that alone because she had a job and she was making money.  They would put a different spin on what that story really means and what God is really teaching us.

Now to me this goes back to that scripture in I Timothy 4:1-3 where it talks about seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.  I don't know about any of you but I know I have noticed and seen some people who claim to be saved and who go to church mixing in some of that witchcraft stuff.  Witchcraft, voodoo, wizardry, sorcery, warlocks and all of that.  I mean some real divination stuff and all it really is is rebellion.  What these people are doing is sitting in these churches and actually teaching people or trying to teach people how to be rebellious and stirring up confusion.  And then some of them will even have the nerve to make it seem like God is using them to do this foolishness.  And it is real.  We all know that witchcraft is real and that isn't even talking about that Harry Potter stuff you see in the movies.  I mean some real demonic stuff.

So, I just thought I would share that with you.  Let me know what you think about it.  Have you noticed anything like this?  Peace!!

Dear Newcity,

I'm Canegrande (Big Dog). As a brother who has seen this kind of stuff in the Church grow into an infesration, I heartily counsel you to - RUN!! Find a church that teaches the WHOLE, UNADULTERATED (that is unmixed) Word of God. Obviously, something about such activity has rubbed you the wrong way. Count it as favour!

Mischaracterizing scriptures is not a new phenomenon. People have been wrongly dividing the Word of God--sometimes in error and sometimes intentionally--for a very long time. There are even biblical examples of this, like when the Devil himself distorted the context of psalm 91:12 to try to convince Jesus to throw himself off a cliff!

I think it is always helpful to take time to carefully review a passage in the bible about which there are questions raised in bible study. This cannot always be done during the class session itself, sadly, given the time restraints we usually put on them. But it is wonderful if the pastor or an elder is present at these classes so as to note the importance of returning to the topic at another time (like in a preached message, or a pastoral teaching session).  For  example, a careful and contextual reading of Acts 16 (where Paul's exorcism of the foul spirit in that girl is recorded) would show how Luke, the writer of Acts, clearly is critical of the "masters" of the girl, who were exploiting her and who wrongly had Paul and Silas punished for delivering her (consider the implications of Acts 16:37,38). When these confusing disputes over scripture come up, it would be best to take the time to find the resolution in the passage itself.

Of course, if there are just contrary people in your midst who want to stir things up, I suppose they'll never be satisfied no matter how much time you take to show them they've misinterpreted the scripture.

Stay encouraged.

- Joe
